Furniture: Great Designs from Fine Woodworking

$15.97

Once woodworkers master basic techniques and have some experience building projects, they begin to look for inspiration. For over 30 years woodworkers have turned to Fine Woodworking magazine, not only for the wide variety of projects offered, but because the designs offer a level of refinement and sophistication not found in other magazine projects. A signature feature of Fine Woodworking project articles is detailed exploded drawings. Some of these plans are works of art in themselves and reward careful study with insights into the basis of good furniture design. For the many woodworkers who come from engineering and other technical disciplines, these plans are worth the price of the book alone.
This book collects the furniture and accessory articles that contain exploded drawings from the last 15 years of Fine Woodworking. It is organized by type of furniture (tables, beds, case pieces, etc.). The book contains approximately 60-65 projects. Because there is such a wide variety of styles, projects types, and skill levels, it should appeal to a wide range of woodworkers.

    Articles from their magazine
I’m giving this 5 stars due to the fact that the articles are very well done. But that’s what they are. Articles picked from Fine Woodworking Magazine. If you have the library, it might not be worth it since there will be nothing new. The TV stand is also obsolete now that they’ve changed since 2006.

    Great may be overblown.
Am a professional woodworker. I buy books like these to expand my knowledge base. There’s always something new to add to what you already know, and books like these should do just that. but the material in this book on each project is so sparse as to barely hint on what’s needed to do the project. True, I could go back into my voluminous back issues of Fine Woodworking collection and get the whole article, or consult the New Taunton cd rom that would do the same, but then the book is merely a project index. And I’m sure the Cd rom has that as an option. For someone with little experience at building ,it’s not enough, and “old hats” at this won’t get much for their buck. And as I said, most old hats have these pieces/articles in their magazine collections already. Ho Hum…

    Beautiful
This book is beautiful, with lots of great designs and exploded pictures. To be clear, if you’re venturing towards design and looking to expand your horizons, this is a great book. But to be clear, it’s not a how-to guide, and I wasn’t looking for one.

    All meat, no fat
Like everything associated with Fine Woodworking, this book was neither inexpensive nor cheap. (I think I paid more than $20 for it … Amazon currently has it listed for $15-ish, and it’s a no-brainer at that price!) There’s no fluff or fat here, no projects nobody in their right mind somebody would want in his or her home … just photos and drawings of good-looking pieces. The other thing you won’t find here is step-by-step instruction. Experienced woodworkers will find what they need to recreate these pieces, but the book does not hold your hand.

Great ideas, with very good details.
I really enjoyed seeing the designs in this book. The pictures are excellent and there is plenty of detail to be able to create the works. If you have Fine Woodworking magazines then you’ve seen the quality of the projects. If you have many old issues of FW, you may not even want this book, since it is a collection of the projects they have done in the mags.I’d recommend it to anyone (who doesn’t already have tons of FW mags).

    Excellent Value at $17
I really like this book. I’ve built several pieces following articles from Fine Woodworking magazine and have always been very pleased with their how-to articles.Unfortunately, each piece of furniture in this book is short on how-to information. Each piece has a complete measured drawing but the construction details are pretty much left for the reader to determine. Several pieces would benefit from more detailed construction advice. But a solid intermediate-level woodworker will be able to build everything shown in here.I was surprised to see the Newport secretary included here. Anyone that intends to build a piece of furniture that will require at least 1000 hours to complete will probably want the complete article (and not the abridged version found here) and will probably do extensive research before undertaking such a monumental project.

Exactly what I was looking for. My son will love it.

This book includes drawings and details of all the pieces used to build each piece. some more reach may be required on the how to achieve some of the details. Overall really like the book.

Don’t expect a detailed cut list, but there are lots of plans and they have adequate information. The book is really nice, with good designs. I am happy that I bought it.Bear in mind that you can actually get the whole back catalogue of popular woodworking for double this price I’m usb format, which includes all designs here, butI love a book and it’s nice to read.
