Fun and Nostalgic Movie for the Whole Family
This movie brings back so many childhood memories! It’s a fun, action-packed adventure that’s perfect for family movie nights. The 3D elements are a cool touch, and the story is entertaining for kids and nostalgic for adults who grew up with the Spy Kids series. It’s a great addition to my collection. Highly recommend for fans of the franchise or anyone looking for a lighthearted, enjoyable film!

    a 3D masterpiece!
n many ways, Spy Kids 3D: Game Over exhibits the same kind of colorful, larger-than-life approach to storytelling that was evident in its two predecessors. And, as with the earlier movies, full creative control rests in the palm of Robert Rodriguez, who wears more hats than a baseball player during a season: director, writer, producer, cinematographer, composer, editor, production designer, and visual effects supervisor. However, if you sense a “but” coming, your intuition does you credit. It’s a big “but.”The problem is the decision to present 2/3 of this movie in 3D – a format that has long since been rejected by serious movie-goers as a cheap gimmick. There are two fundamental problems with the kind of 3D that Rodriguez employs here: it requires cardboard glasses (with one red lens and another green), and the visuals inevitably appear washed out and monochromatic. The former is a bigger problem than the latter. In order to view Spy Kids 3D the way the director intends, you have to don these irritatingly uncomfortable glasses for more than an hour. I gave up after about 10 minutes and ended up watching the majority of the 3D scenes in blurry 2D, with triple images. That was preferable to keeping the cheap cardboard glasses on. Had this movie been released in good old-fashioned 2D, it would have earned a solid recommendation, rather than a half-hearted one. Hopefully, for the DVD release, Rodriguez will make both 3D and non-3D versions available. I would like to see what this movie looks like with full color restored. Then, the experience of watching would be more of an enjoyment and less of a chore. This time, the film centers around the younger, male Spy Kid, Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara), whose services are required when his older sister, Carmen (Alexa Vega), disappears while investigating the corner of cyberspace occupied by the new video game from a master programmer known only as The Toymaker (Sylvester Stallone). Carmen is trapped on level four, and Juni must go in, find her, and shut down the program before it captures the minds of the world’s youths. Accompanying him is his grandfather (Ricardo Montalban), who has an old score to settle with The Toymaker. Inside, Juni finds other allies, including a trio of beta-testers and a rival player, Demetra (Courtney Jines), who could end up being girlfriend material. But winning may not be what’s best for the world, because it furthers The Toymaker’s goals. It’s clear that Rodriguez has an intimate knowledge of the current state of video games, because his cyber-world looks pretty much like one would expect from a virtual reality adaptation of a Gameboy title. It’s more advanced that what we were presented with in Tron, which was made in an era when Pac Man was near the zenith of electronic game complexity. It’s kind of fun watching Juni struggle through the various levels of the video game, grabbing power-ups and engaging in action-oriented challenges. Rodriguez has some fun at the expense of the games and those who play them, but these are the jabs of someone with more than a passing familiarity with the material.

    pretty darn cool
This is the first hollywood blockbuster released in field-sequential (FS) 3D. The red and blue glasses were used in the theaters and in the first DVD release, but this release is much better than the first. This version works with the shutter-glasses type of 3D system, which is fairly easy to get your hands on. It’s available at Amazon in the Ultimate 3D Collection, which comes with 3 3D Imax flix (stay away from the Ultimate 3D Horror Collection! The three films that come with it are not genuine 3D films–read my review there). This type of 3D really pops off the screen in full color without the distracting red/blue glasses, and it’s quite amazing that a mainstream movie has been converted to a somewhat underground viewing format. “3D Transitions”, another FS DVD here at Amazon is a good companion to this. I have also purchased the HQFS (High Quality Field Sequential) version of Santa vs. The Snowman, but I haven’t had a chance to watch it. Also, there are numerous older 3D movies available for this system, but most are less-than-legal versions of Jaws 3D, Friday the 13th Part III in 3D, House of Wax, It Came From Outer Space, etc. These are easy to find on auction sites as well as some private sites.

THE MOST FUN YOU WILL EVER HAVE!!!!
I watched this movie with my 5 kids and they all had a blast. Every time something silly or funny happened they pointed it out and was having an amazing time. The shot composition was perfect with amazing editing and great screen play, The plot had many twists and turns that left me and my kids on the edge of my seat. The dialog was perfect with many lines that fit the mood like “Did someone ring up the Dinkster?!”. The special effects will totally drag you in with everything feeling real and in your face. Overall I feel like everyone who worked on this movie deserves a high 5.

This 2003 scifi adventure is set some time after the second Spy kids movie. Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara) has become disillusioned and quit the OSS and now works as a struggling child private detective. When his sister, Carmen Cortez (Alexa Vega), goes ‘missing’ inside a computer game, Juni returns to the OSS to save her and enters the game, but can he reach level 4 and rescue her and will they make it to Level five –the impossible level? The film is essentially a reworking of ‘Tron’. Sylvester Stallone plays the baddie -‘Toymaker’, who is using the game to gain world domination. The action is fast paced with lots of weird and wonderful gadgets and game features to overcome but the plot is much more basic than the other films and is somewhat ‘jumpy’ in places. Also this focuses far more on Juni, Carmen doesn’t really figure until the last third, which gives a differing slant to this. The single disc opens to a language selection screen [English, Italian or German]. Selection takes you to main menu offering set up [languages and subtitles], scene selection, play, bonus material [10 minute film school, Alexa in concert, commentary and making of, effects and some other items] and a set top game [basically based on the race sequence from the movie]. This was intended to be the final instalment and as such all the major characters from the other 2 films pops up somewhere. With it’s use of bold colours, crisp picture, driving sound effects, gripping action sequences with battling robots and other strange game objects, lack of swearing or sexual references, this is an obvious family orientated movie and despite its weaknesses, still manages to scrape a ***** rating.
