Wow, this is a fantastic book!!
I just received my copy of Vacation At Home and I am so impressed. It’s really beautiful and it has immediately made me want to edit the things in my home to create a more restful and beautiful place. Seriously, I am inspired. There is something about the layout and gorgeous images in the book that is so beautiful. Even though there is a fair amount of text, it is all super useful and pleasurable to take in, and it doesn’t talk down to the reader. In fact, I like that Vern gives you ideas on how to do this stuff on a budget and how to really honor your own taste and style. One of his ideas is to look at things you have on display in your house and to sort them by what really means something to you vs. what is just there because it’s there. Then he offers ways to give the things that you love prominence so you enjoy them more.I’ve admired Vern Yip on TV and I liked the concept of making my home feel more serene, but I didn’t realize the things I was doing that work against that. Anyway, I don’t review a lot of books, but I was moved to share this.

Great book to learn design tricks and rules
I am not an interior designer. We just bought a house and I wanted to learn about interior design before I start buying furniture. I also wanted our house to be like a vacation home, so I thought this book would be perfect. And it really was! There are a lot of photos, which I believe it’s very important when you are learning about design. You just cannot imagine or “get it” only from writing. About half of this book is photos from author’s designed houses. The best part of this book (for me at least) was that he summarizes the rules of interior design the way it’s easy to understand. For example, the rug placement should be 12-18 inch from the wall, and the curtain’s placement should be — inch above the window or as close as ceiling so that it would give the visual trick to make the room bigger. The book is also categorized by rooms. It is very well organized book and I love that too. I learned a lot from this book and I am so happy I bought it!

Transforming your home into your ultimate retreat
In the introduction to his gorgeous new book, Vern summarizes his mission as transforming your everyday home into “a vacation home that we happen to live in every day.” We all work so hard that Vern is right: we deserve to come home to a sense of tranquility and restoration. Our homes should–and can–give us the same satisfaction as walking into a resort. The question is, how to do it? I’ve bought a lot of design books over the years and most of them strike me as a kind of architectural porn: beautiful (and super-lucky for the owners of those homes), but unattainable. What I loved about Vern’s first book, I love about this one, too. He combines inspiring design images with clear, practical blueprints for how to transform your own space. I may be drooling over the images of these fantastic homes, but I’m also walking away with a plan for the things I’m going to do to make my own home more resort-like. Throughout the book, you clearly feel that he’s not just trying to impress you with all these great homes he’s designed. He’s taking you by the hand to help you bring tranquility, balance and beauty to your own home. Totally loved the book and I’ve already started planning some changes (many of them small and easy, a few of them more ambitious)!

OUTSTANDING! An approachable roadmap to great design in your own home.
While this book is a crazy page-turner if you want to be awe of Vern Yip’s pure design genius, it’s also an intelligent and digestible roadmap that left me feeling empowered that great design is achievable by everyone. In 18 points, Vern outlines how you can make your home a dream to live in. These are simple things like editing what you have, how to display what you truly love, easy and inexpensive plants, how to space plan, etc. Honestly… anyone can follow these steps. I love this book, and I really believe that it is written in a way that is approachable and actionable. I will be giving this book as a gift for the holidays… I love it that much. GOOD LUCK!

Another fantastic book by Vern
My Wife and I have been fans of Vern’s design work way back to Trading Spaces days. (The original). We purchased his first book since my Wife loves his work, and we were able to gain a ton of knowledge on the basics of design. Add this one to the library, and the education continues! Simple straightforward information that will help you from making the same mistakes over and over again. I cannot tell you how many times we had to re-do something because we didn’t know how to execute on a vision. Buy this book and the first…you won’t be disappointed!!

Too Modern For My Taste
If youâre into clean, modern, and playful spaces, this book is probably for you. I have his Design Wise book which I really enjoyed. It had more pieces of history mixed in with new which is probably why I liked it best. This book is nice, but just not my taste.

Worth It
I’m a design student, but way before I started my schooling, I’ve been inspired by the effect resorts and hotels have on their visitors. Posh salons and spas are another luxury I hear people longing to indulge in. I’ve always wondered why all these people don’t recreate these wonderful experiences in their own homes – right???? I was thrilled when this book was released, because even though many designers mention and promote a spa and/or resort feel at home, everyday, they don’t focus on the details like Vern shares in “Vacation at Home”. My primary intention when designing is to bring a sense of the luxe and resort-at-home experience to my clients, regardless of budget, and reading this book felt like a chance to “shadow” and learn directly from Vern, an amazing opportunity! Thank you, Mr. Yip, for sharing your insights. You are appreciated!
