Artist Joy de Rohan Chabot is particularly fond of nineteenth-century ceramics and has an extensive collection of faience barbotines and vases. The oil painting above the chimney is a portrait of Joy by Catalan artist Joaquim Torrents Llado.
A rustic-style “Norwegian” bathroom, named for its Norwegian pine walls, with a nineteenth-century claw foot bathtub.
The owners extended this kitchen into a theatrical turn-of-thecentury-style orangery for dining. The hanging metallic light fixture was designed by Jansen. All the hand-painted glassware on the table and the fanciful green “Chimères” candleholders were made by the artist.
This bedroom pays homage to its castle’s former resident, Guillaume de Julien, who gave the estate its present appearance. The prevailing Italian influence ranges from furnishings such as the ornate Sicilian throne armchair to the terrazzo marble flooring, invented in Venice.
The owners of this home were advised to lime-render the walls with a special mix of lavender and hemp, a frequently used technique of the region. Their friend and neighbor, Ian Harper, made the geometrically designed concrete floor.
The seventeenth-century orange-walled sunlit loggia, where many of the plants and furniture date to the 1950s, is a combination of North African and vintage design. The current owner, John-Mark Horton, has preserved this room—his favorite in the house—exactly as it was when Poteau and Clarke entertained here, from the brick flooring with marble inserts to the orange folding chairs, which belonged to Poteau.
